A Simple Guide to Understanding the Role of Urogynecologists Better and Pelvic Floor Disorders

If you say urologist, you are referring to a health professional who specializes in the treatment and diagnosis of any disorders affecting the urinary system. If you say gynecologist, on the other hand, this is a health professional who has decided to specialize in the treatment and diagnosis of all female reproductive system disorders and conditions. The subspecialty termed urogynecologist is a combination of the both of these fields of medicine. To put things into better perspective, you need to understand that either a urologist or an OB-gynecologist can be a urogynecologist as long as they specialize in takin care of any pelvic or urology problems that are present among women.

For anything and everything related to obstetrics and gynecology, you can rest assured that these urogynecologists can take care of them. In addition, being able to treat and evaluate various conditions affecting the female pelvic organs as well as all the connective tissues and muscles that support these organs is something that they are able to do from their additional training. When such a training is done, they can then help women deal with the gynecologic problems that they are going through that are non-cancerous in nature but maybe due to childbirth, aging, or menopause using either non-surgical or surgical treatment methods. The common issues that these urogynecologists treat affect one out of four women. This number if quite high, most especially if you compare it with the current numbers of women who are suffering from diabetes, hypertension, or depression.

Some of the most common pelvic floor disorders that any urogynecologists can treat include uterine prolapse, bladder prolapse, vaginal prolapse, fecal incontinence, and urinary incontinence. As women age, some of their female organs may go down their pelvic area, this is what you call prolapse. Prolapse is often in combination with incontinence because some believe that this might have been caused to the damage being done by the pelvic floor after childbirth. But then, while a child is being delivered is the main cause of these two conditions, there are still other causative factors that lead to them. Suffering from severe constipation, chronic coughing, and obesity and doing daily heavy lifting as required by the job are other factors that have been shown to be present among most women suffering from incontinence and prolapse.

When it comes to these pelvic floor disorders, urogynecologists can either treat them using pharmacological, surgical, or behavioral means. Most urogynecologists will not result to surgery right away on their patients but advise their patients to change their behaviors first like doing some exercises and going on a diet. Since most beverage and food choices can irritate the bladder of patients, they have to follow a strict diet first and find out if it helps them in any way while not doing any other treatment. Most urogynecologists will also advise doing some pelvic muscle exercises for women to have stronger sphincter muscles. When these two things will still not improve the condition of the patient, then going for medication treatments and surgical treatments maybe a good call.
